VOCAL COACHING & performance prep
Voice & Speech for Performance and Expression
What Is Vocal Coaching?
Vocal Coaching supports actors, singers, & public speakers in developing a voice that is free, expressive, and reliable across both singing and speech. I see the voice as a holistic, whole-body instrument — shaped by breath, physical organization, responsiveness, and expressive intention — rather than something to be controlled through isolated technique.
Rather than applying a single method universally, vocal coaching is individualized and responsive to you and your needs. The focus is on helping each person access a voice that feels connected, efficient, and authentic, whether for performance, professional communication, or everyday expression.
This work supports not only how the voice sounds, but how it feels to use it.
How Vocal Coaching Works
Vocal coaching begins with listening — both to the voice itself and to the physical patterns that influence vocal expression. Sessions integrate technical guidance with embodied awareness, allowing the voice to develop in a way that feels sustainable, grounded, and adaptable.
The work may explore:
Breath coordination and support
Release of unnecessary tension
Resonance, range, and vocal clarity
Articulation and speech patterns
Vocal stamina and consistency
Presence and expressive availability
Sessions are experiential and adaptive, meeting the voice where it is and building from there rather than pushing toward a preset sound or outcome.
Voicework Approach & Influences
My vocal coaching draws primarily from Fitzmaurice Voicework® and Knight-Thompson Speechwork, two well-established approaches used widely in professional voice, acting, and performance training.
Fitzmaurice Voicework® is a holistic voice approach that works with breath, physical release, movement, and dynamic vocal response. A central component of this work involves destructuring — the intentional disruption of habitual patterns of holding and over-control that limit vocal freedom and expressivity. Through specific physical and breath-based explorations, familiar vocal organization is interrupted so unconscious patterns can surface and shift.
Following destructuring, the work moves into restructuring, where breath, body, and sound are reintegrated into more functional and expressive coordination. This phase supports clarity, stamina, resonance, and reliability, allowing the voice to organize itself with greater ease and adaptability. Together, destructuring and restructuring support a voice that is both expressive and grounded — capable of spontaneity while remaining supported and sustainable.
Knight-Thompson Speechwork focuses on clarity, articulation, and intelligibility in spoken language. This approach supports an embodied speaking voice by working with the physical and expressive components of speech rather than forcing sound or pronunciation. It is especially helpful for actors, speakers, and professionals who want speech that feels precise, natural, and connected.
Together, these approaches support a voice that is both free and functional, adaptable across singing, speech, performance, and everyday communication.
Singing Coaching
Singing coaching supports healthy vocal function, expressive range, and performance readiness by meeting each singer where they are. Rather than working from a single vocal method, the approach is responsive and adaptive—shaped by the singer’s voice, body, goals, musical context, and lived experience.
The work draws from classical and contemporary vocal traditions, including bel canto principles, speech level singing, and Fitzmaurice Voicework®. These influences inform how breath, resonance, coordination, and ease are supported, while allowing technique to evolve organically rather than being imposed. Technique is treated as a foundation that supports expression, not something separate from it.
Alongside technical development, equal attention is given to what is being communicated through the song and how the singer feels in relationship to the material. Meaning, intention, and emotional experience are understood as integral to vocal coordination and performance. As clarity and connection deepen, the voice responds with greater freedom, presence, and authenticity.
The emphasis is on helping each singer develop a voice that feels reliable, expressive, and sustainable — one that can adapt to changing demands without strain or over-effort, and that supports full embodiment in performance.
Singing coaching may support:
Vocal consistency and ease
Expansion of range and resonance
Reduction of strain or fatigue
Performance preparation and confidence
Reconnection with pleasure, presence, and expressivity in singing
The focus is on building trust with the voice and developing technique that supports longevity, adaptability, and authentic expression.
Speech Coaching
Speech coaching supports clarity, presence, and expressive precision in spoken language, with a strong emphasis on speech as performance. This work recognizes that how we speak is inseparable from what we are doing, thinking, and intending in the moment — especially when working with text or speaking in front of others.
Drawing from Knight-Thompson Speechwork, sessions focus on articulation, intelligibility, and vocal clarity while working directly with monologues, scenes, presentations, and public speaking material. Rather than separating speech technique from performance, the work integrates them — so clarity, intention, and expressivity develop together.
Attention is given to how thought, intention, and relationship to the material shape speech patterns in real time. As these elements align, speech becomes clearer, more grounded, and more compelling — without becoming effortful or over-controlled.
Speech coaching may support:
Actors working on monologues, scenes, or text
Public speakers and presenters
Professionals communicating in high-visibility or performance-based contexts
Anyone seeking clearer, more expressive speech in performance or presentation
Dialect & Accent Work
In addition to speech coaching, I offer dialect and accent work, including support with General American speech patterns. This work focuses on clarity, intelligibility, and flexibility in spoken language, while respecting each person’s linguistic background and identity.
Drawing from Knight-Thompson Speechwork, sessions explore how speech sounds are physically produced and how shifts in articulation, rhythm, and coordination influence clarity. The emphasis is on understanding speech patterns rather than correcting or erasing accent, allowing clients to expand their range and choice in how they communicate.
Dialect and accent work may be helpful for:
Actors working with General American or other dialects
Professionals seeking clearer, more easily understood speech
Non-native English speakers building confidence in spoken communication
Individuals navigating performance, presentation, or leadership contexts
The goal is not to remove identity from the voice, but to support clear, embodied, and adaptable speech — so clients can communicate effectively while remaining connected to who they are.
What Makes This Vocal Coaching Different
This approach differs from traditional voice lessons by recognizing the voice as an extension of the person, rather than a separate instrument to be trained in isolation. The voice is the only instrument that lives inside us, shaped by how we breathe, move, think, feel, and relate to what we are expressing. As a result, vocal work is inseparable from identity, presence, and self-expression.
Rather than focusing only on mechanics or sound production, this work attends to how technique, intention, and expression interact in real time. When the voice is supported holistically, it becomes more responsive, expressive, and trustworthy — capable of communicating meaning as fully as it produces sound.
The goal is not a “perfect” voice, but a voice that feels authentic, adaptable, and alive — one that reflects who you are and how you want to be heard.

How Vocal Coaching Fits Within My Work
Vocal coaching is a distinct offering within my broader ecosystem of work. While other services may focus on holistic peak performance within your life, nervous system regulation, or personal growth, vocal coaching centers specifically on voice, expression, and communication.
Some clients work exclusively with vocal coaching. Others integrate it alongside somatic or performance-oriented coaching, depending on their goals.
